Ottawa Food Security Guide

Updated: Aug 5

If you're struggling to put food on the table, you're not alone.

Many individuals and families across Ottawa rely on community programs to help make ends meet. Finding the right resource, however, can be overwhelming, especially during a difficult time.

This guide was created to make that process easier by organizing food assistance programs into three categories:

  • Need Food Today: Free meals that can often be accessed the same day.

  • Groceries for Home: Food banks and community pantries that provide groceries to take home.

  • Ongoing Support: Community organizations that offer longer-term food assistance, referrals, and additional support services.

Understanding Ottawa's Food Support Network

Ottawa has an extensive network of food banks, community meal programs, pantries, churches, shelters, and community organizations working together to help people experiencing food insecurity. However, it's important to understand that most food banks are designed to provide emergency assistance, not a full month's worth of groceries.

Many food banks provide approximately 3–10 days of food per visit and often limit grocery hampers to once every 28–30 days so they can assist as many households as possible. As a result, many people rely on a combination of food banks, community meals, food pantries, and other support services throughout the month.

Demand for food assistance has increased significantly in recent years, placing additional pressure on organizations across Ottawa. While the city has a broad network of supports, availability can vary depending on family size, dietary needs, transportation, eligibility requirements, and overall demand.

The purpose of this guide is to bring these resources together in one place, making it easier to find the support that's available and reducing the time spent searching when food is urgently needed.

Whether you're looking for help yourself, supporting a friend or family member, or sharing resources within your community, I hope this guide makes accessing food support in Ottawa a little easier.

Please consider sharing it so more people know where to turn when they need help.

Before You Visit

Some organizations welcome walk-ins, while others require an appointment, registration, or serve only specific neighbourhoods. Eligibility, hours, and visit limits can also vary. Check each listing before you go to ensure you receive the quickest assistance. Some Ottawa Food Bank member agencies also serve clients based on postal code and may limit grocery visits, so confirming your eligibility first can save you a trip.
