Active & Ongoing Projects

Cara Gardens is a volunteer-led initiative focused on individual, family, and community gardening, habitat restoration, and pollinator support. Projects are carried out by a small, dedicated family team committed to improving local green spaces through steady, hands-on stewardship.

Origin of Cara Gardens

Cara Gardens began as an ecological restoration effort following the clearing of large sections of land along the local hydro corridor. The removal of vegetation displaced wildlife and significantly reduced existing habitat within the area. In response, the project was created to help rebuild biodiversity and restore a safe, naturalized space where native plants and local species could return and thrive.

Having grown up in the neighbourhood, I viewed the affected landscape as both home and shared habitat. What started as a personal commitment to environmental stewardship has developed into an ongoing restoration initiative that continues to expand each year. With consistent cleanup, planting, and habitat support, the site has gradually evolved into a resilient green space that embraces a more naturalized, intentionally diverse ecosystem.

Although located on municipal land, Cara Gardens stands as a long-term demonstration of community-driven stewardship, showing how incremental restoration and sustained care can help repair disturbed environments while providing habitat, education, and shared ecological value.

Neighborhood Gardenscapes

Beginning in 2024 and continuing today, Cara Gardens has partnered with local residents to design and establish diverse garden spaces tailored to each property’s needs, ranging from productive potagers to ornamental and native wildflower plantings. The initiative encourages neighbourhood connection by incorporating features such as open seating and visually engaging plantings that can be enjoyed not only by homeowners but also by pedestrians. The goal is to increase green space, promote biodiversity, and foster a shared sense of stewardship within the community.

Indigenous Community Food Garden

A seed donation was sent through Cara Gardens to an Indigenous community in the Sandy Lake region to help initiate a community food-growing project. The effort was intended to support local food sovereignty and provide resources that could assist residents in producing fresh vegetables, herbs, and traditional plants closer to home.

Local Community Food Garden & Pollinator Patch

The Community Food Garden and Pollinator Patch is a community garden proposal developed to expand local food access while strengthening urban biodiversity. The plan combines shared food-growing space, including raised beds for vegetables, herbs, and culturally relevant crops, with a dedicated pollinator garden that I would help design, install, and maintain using regionally appropriate native species. The goal is to create a welcoming, educational growing environment that supports residents, improves soil health, and provides long-term habitat for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
