2024 Backyard Food Garden Transformation

In 2024, Cara Gardens was asked to help transform an overgrown backyard in another neighbourhood into a productive food garden.

The space had fallen into disrepair and needed a full cleanup before anything could be planted. Over the course of a week, the area was cut back, cleared, and prepared for growing. This included trimming overgrown sections, cutting back tree lines, removing undesirable plants, uprooting problem growth, tilling the ground, and turning the backyard into a usable growing space.

Once the area was cleared and workable, it was planted with a variety of useful food crops and herbs, including basil, oregano, sage, thyme, rosemary, lettuce, sweet peppers, ultra-spicy peppers, and many bush-type squash plants.

The goal was not just to clean up the space, but to leave the homeowner with something productive, hopeful, and enjoyable for the season. What started as an overgrown backyard became a food-producing garden that gave her something to look forward to, learn from, and care for throughout the growing year.

This project was provided free of charge as part of Cara Gardens’ larger belief that gardening should be accessible, practical, and empowering. A neglected space can become a source of food, confidence, and beauty when someone is given the right support to begin.

In 2027, another expansion will be underway.
