In 2026, Cara Gardens contributed a large supply donation to the S.O.S. Steps Off the Street Initiative, a community outreach effort led by Gerald, who spends his weekends walking through the downtown area to provide free essential items, food, and support to people experiencing homelessness.
This donation was focused on hygiene, dignity, and practical daily care. Many people living without stable housing do not have regular access to basic supplies that others may take for granted, such as soap, toothbrushes, bandages, razors, towels, or even something as simple as a comb. These items can make a real difference in someone’s comfort, health, confidence, and ability to get through the day with a little more care and respect.
To support this work, Cara Gardens personally purchased supplies in bulk so they could be distributed directly to people in need.
Supplies Donated (5,078 Items)
2,000 disposable hand soaps
1,000 cotton swabs
1,000 assorted bandages
400 elastic hair ties
300 hair combs
120 alcohol wipes
100 toothbrushes
100 razors
100 microfiber cloths for individuals with prescription glasses
98 travel towels
60 lip balms
This donation was made to help ensure that people experiencing homelessness had better access to basic hygiene and personal care supplies. While these items may seem small individually, together they create meaningful support for people who are often navigating difficult circumstances without consistent access to washrooms, clean storage, medical supplies, or personal care products.
For Cara Gardens, this initiative reflects the same values behind its gardening and food security work: community care, dignity, access, and practical support. Helping people does not always require a large organization or complicated process. Sometimes it begins with recognizing a need, gathering what you can, and placing those resources directly into the hands of people who need them.
