How to Protect Your Garden From Earwigs



Earwigs are one of the most misunderstood garden insects. They are nocturnal, secretive, and often discovered only after damage has already occurred. Chewed petals, ragged leaf edges, and seedlings that seem to disappear overnight are common signs. Because earwigs are most active at night and hide during the day, many gardeners reach for chemical controls out of frustration. Unfortunately, chemical treatments introduce risks to soil life, pollinators, pets, and people, especially when the plants being protected are meant for food.



Why Earwigs Become a Problem

Earwigs are attracted to moisture, shelter, and decaying organic matter. They thrive in gardens with heavy mulch kept constantly wet, dense ground cover, and plenty of dark hiding places. While they do feed on aphids and other small pests, they will readily switch to tender plant tissue when populations grow or when preferred food is scarce.


Seedlings, soft leafy greens, flower buds, and ripening fruit are the most vulnerable. Earwig damage often worsens during prolonged wet weather, when hiding spots are abundant and plants remain tender longer.



Habitat Modification as the First Line of Defense

The most effective long term strategy is changing the garden environment so it is less appealing to earwigs.


Avoid keeping mulch soaked at the soil surface. Mulch is valuable, but it should be allowed to dry slightly between watering. Pull mulch back a few centimetres from the base of young plants to reduce hiding zones. Remove unnecessary debris such as boards, stones, overturned pots, and dense piles of organic matter near beds.


Water in the morning rather than the evening. This allows the soil surface to dry before nightfall, reducing the damp conditions earwigs prefer during their active hours.



Trapping Methods That Actually Work

Earwigs are easy to trap because they actively seek dark, tight spaces during the day.


Rolled newspaper or cardboard tubes placed near affected plants provide ideal hiding spots. In the morning, these traps can be shaken into a bucket of soapy water or disposed of. Repeating this daily can significantly reduce populations within a week.

Shallow containers filled with vegetable oil and a small amount of soy sauce or fish oil attract earwigs effectively. These traps should be buried so the rim is level with the soil surface. Earwigs fall in and cannot escape. This method works well in both vegetable beds and flower gardens.

Upside down flower pots stuffed with straw or wood shavings also function as effective shelters that can be emptied daily.



Physical Barriers for Sensitive Plants

Physical exclusion is extremely effective, especially for seedlings and prized flowers.


Copper tape or copper collars placed around raised beds, pots, or individual plants deter earwigs through mild electrical sensation created by contact. This method works best when kept clean and dry.


Diatomaceous earth can be used sparingly as a barrier around plants, but it must remain dry to be effective. It should be applied carefully and not broadcast broadly, as it can harm beneficial insects if misused.


Fine mesh cloches or row covers protect young plants during their most vulnerable stage. These are especially useful for lettuce, basil, and newly transplanted seedlings.



Natural Deterrents

Earwigs navigate primarily by touch and smell, not sight. Their soft bodies and sensitive antennae make them especially reactive to abrasive textures, strong scents, and irritating plant compounds. This makes them easier to deter than many other pests.


  1. Ground chili pepper or cayenne works by irritating the antennae and mouthparts. It does not kill the insect, but it makes feeding extremely uncomfortable. A light dusting around the base of plants or on surrounding soil can discourage nighttime feeding. Reapplication is needed after rain.

  2. Black pepper functions similarly, though it is slightly less effective than chili pepper. It can still be useful when combined with other deterrents.

  3. Garlic cold tea is one of the most effective. Garlic contains sulfur compounds that repel many soft bodied insects. To make it, crush several cloves and steep in cold water for 12 to 24 hours. Strain and spray directly onto leaves and stems in the evening.

  4. Hot pepper cold tea combines capsaicin with water soluble compounds that deter feeding. Use dried chili flakes or fresh peppers steeped in cold water. This spray discourages chewing without damaging plant tissue.

  5. Mint or peppermint cold tea disrupts scent recognition. Earwigs rely on chemical cues to locate food. Mint confuses this process and encourages them to move elsewhere.

  6. Wormwood or sage cold tea is particularly effective for flower beds. These plants contain bitter compounds that deter feeding and are traditionally used in pest management.



Companion Plants That Disrupt Earwig Behaviour

  • Marjoram

  • Winter Savory

  • Dill

  • Fennel

  • Coriander

  • Sweet alyssum

  • Bay laurel

  • Hyssop

  • Catnip

  • Western yarrow

  • Dusty miller

  • Lamb's ear

  • Mints (peppermint, spearmint, horsemint)

  • Alliums (onion, leek, garlic, and chives)


These plants do not repel earwigs from an entire garden, but they significantly reduce damage in localized areas. Some release strong aromatic compounds that earwigs dislike, while others reduce feeding pressure when interplanted.



Soil and Plant Health as a Deterrent

Healthy plants are less attractive to earwigs. Soft, nitrogen heavy growth is more easily damaged and preferred by pests.


Avoid overfertilizing with nitrogen. Excess nitrogen produces lush, tender leaves that earwigs target first.


Strengthen plant cell walls by improving calcium availability through balanced soil amendments. Stronger tissues are harder for earwigs to chew.


Plants grown in biologically active soil often experience less pest pressure because they produce stronger defensive compounds naturally.



What to Avoid

Avoid essential oil sprays sold as pest repellents. Many are phytotoxic, unsafe for food crops, or harmful to pollinators.


Avoid broad spice application directly on edible leaves close to harvest unless thoroughly washed.


Avoid soap based sprays, which can damage plant tissue and soil microbes if overused.


Avoid pairing with leafy greens, soft-stemmed herbs, fruit/veg crops with sheltered structure, decaying or stressed plants, high-damage plants that boom growth (dahlia, zinnia, marigold, cosmo, sunflower, pansy, petunia), and plants that create ideal shelter micro climates (hosta, daylily, fern, dense groundcover, and ornamental grass)



Why Chemical Controls Are Not Necessary

Chemical insecticides often kill indiscriminately. They do not distinguish between pests and beneficial organisms, and residues can remain on edible crops and in soil. Many chemicals also disrupt natural predator populations, which can lead to larger pest outbreaks later.


Non chemical methods reduce earwig populations without introducing toxins into the food system or harming pollinators, soil microbes, or people.



A Balanced Perspective

Earwigs are part of the garden ecosystem. Complete eradication is neither realistic nor desirable. The goal is balance, not elimination. By removing excess shelter, using targeted traps, protecting vulnerable plants, and supporting predators, earwig damage can be reduced to a manageable level without compromising soil health or food safety.


Healthy gardens are resilient gardens. When the environment is balanced, pests rarely take over.
