Black Beauty Zucchini is a classic heirloom summer squash introduced in the early 1900s. It is prized for its glossy, dark green fruits, vigorous growth, and exceptional productivity. Unlike vining squash, Black Beauty grows in a compact bush form, making it well suited for home gardens and raised beds.

Historical Uses

Developed in the United States and introduced by the W. Atlee Burpee Company in 1921, Black Beauty quickly became one of the world's most popular zucchini varieties. Gardeners appreciated its dependable yields, tender flesh, and ability to produce continuously throughout the growing season. Black Beauty Zucchini performs best in fertile soil with plenty of room for air circulation. While it can be grown in large containers, garden beds generally produce the highest yields.

Wildlife Protection: Recommended. Deer, rabbits, squirrels, groundhogs, raccoons, and rodents may feed on young plants, blossoms, or developing fruit. Netting or fencing may be necessary in areas with heavy wildlife activity.

How to Grow

Direct sow after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures have warmed to at least 18°C (65°F). Alternatively, start indoors 2-3 weeks before transplanting.

Plant seeds 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep and keep the soil consistently moist during germination. Once established, water deeply at the base of the plant while avoiding wetting the leaves to reduce the risk of powdery mildew.

Harvest fruits regularly while they are 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) long to encourage continuous production throughout the season.

Harvesting

Harvest zucchini when fruits are young, firm, and glossy. Frequent harvesting encourages the plant to continue producing new flowers and fruit.

For seed saving, allow one or two fruits to fully mature on the plant until they become very large, hard, and their skin changes from dark green to yellow or orange.

Collection Method:

Cut open the fully mature squash and scoop out the seeds. Separate the seeds from the surrounding pulp by rinsing them thoroughly with water. Spread the clean seeds in a single layer and allow them to dry completely for 1-2 weeks before storage.

Note: Zucchini readily cross-pollinates with other varieties of Cucurbita pepo. To save true-to-type seed, isolate plants by distance or use controlled hand pollination.

Storage Method:

Store seeds in a non-bleached paper envelope, amber glass jar, or airtight container in a cool, dark, dry location.
