Lemon Honey Cantaloupe
Scientific Name: Cucumis melo var. cantalupensis
Plant Type: Annual
Difficulty: Moderate
Sun: Full Sun
Height: 12-24 inches (30-60 cm) with vines reaching 6-10 feet (1.8-3 m)
Seeds Produced: Approximately 200-600 seeds per fruit
What Is It?
Lemon Honey Cantaloupe is a sweet heirloom muskmelon prized for its golden-yellow rind and exceptionally juicy, fragrant orange flesh. Like other cantaloupes, it belongs to the cucumber family and produces sprawling vines that thrive during warm summer weather. Its fruits are typically smaller than many commercial cantaloupes, making them ideal for home gardens.
Historical Uses
Melons have been cultivated for more than 4,000 years, originating in Africa before spreading throughout Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Over time, gardeners selectively bred countless varieties for sweetness, aroma, size, and storage quality. Lemon Honey Cantaloupe is one of many heirloom selections appreciated for its rich flavor and reliable garden performance.
Growing Information
Sun Requirements: Full sun (8+ hours daily)
Soil Requirements: Rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter
Water Requirements: Moderate to high. Maintain consistent moisture during fruit development while avoiding waterlogged soil.
Plant Height: 12-24 inches (30-60 cm)
Vine Length: 6-10 feet (1.8-3 m)
Spacing: 24-36 inches (60-90 cm)
Germination Time: 5-10 days
Time to Harvest: 80-95 days
Where Should It Be Grown?
✓ Raised Beds
✓ Directly in Garden Soil
✓ Large Containers (minimum 15-20 gallons with trellis support)
✓ Community Gardens
Lemon Honey Cantaloupe performs best where vines have plenty of room to spread or can be trained vertically on a sturdy trellis. If grown vertically, support developing fruit with slings made from fabric or netting.
Wildlife Protection: Recommended. Raccoons, squirrels, chipmunks, deer, rabbits, and groundhogs may all feed on developing melons. Fencing or fruit protection bags can help reduce losses.
How to Grow
Direct sow after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures have warmed to at least 18°C (65°F), or start indoors 3-4 weeks before transplanting.
Plant seeds ½-1 inch (1-2.5 cm) deep. Once seedlings are established, thin to the strongest plants. Apply mulch to help retain soil moisture and reduce weeds. Water consistently, especially while fruits are developing.
Harvesting
Harvest fruits when the rind turns a rich golden-yellow and the melon develops a sweet fragrance. Mature fruits will "slip" easily from the vine with gentle pressure.
For the best flavor, harvest fully ripe fruits and refrigerate shortly before eating.
Seed Collection & Storage
Collection Method:
Scoop seeds from a fully ripe melon and rinse away the pulp. Spread the cleaned seeds on a paper towel or screen and allow them to dry completely for 1-2 weeks before storage.
Storage Method:
Store seeds in a non-bleached paper envelope, amber glass jar, or airtight container in a cool, dark, dry location.
Seed Viability:
Approximately 5-6 years when properly stored.

Interesting Fact
Unlike watermelons, cantaloupes continue developing sugars only while attached to the vine. Picking them too early greatly reduces their sweetness, which is why vine-ripened melons have such exceptional flavor compared to store-bought fruit harvested prematurely.
