Ontario’s forests are a living library. Every tree holds a story, shaped by the land and carried through generations. These stories are older than the roads we travel, the boundaries we draw, and the gardens we tend. They were known to Indigenous peoples long before European settlement. They sheltered early travelers, fed wildlife, and offered their bark, sap, and wood for tools, shelter, and nourishment.


Today, many people can name only a handful of these trees, yet Ontario is home to an extraordinary diversity of species. Each one supports the land in its own way. Each one carries uses that are unique, not interchangeable. A pine is not just a pine. A maple is not just a maple. Even within the same family, each species holds its own knowledge and gifts.


This post brings these trees forward into the light, not as background scenery, but as essential partners in our ecosystems and our history.


PINES


Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus)

History: Eastern White Pine shaped much of Ontario’s early history. It was a central tree for Indigenous nations, who relied on it for transportation, shelter, medicine, and daily tools. When Europeans arrived, it became the most heavily logged tree in the region, especially for ship masts and lumber, altering entire landscapes.

Early settlers relied heavily on its rot resistant wood for shingles, posts, and cabin construction, especially in damp or swampy areas where other wood decayed quickly.

Culinary Use: Beech nuts were eaten raw or roasted and were considered a nutritious autumn food. They were occasionally ground into meal or added to mixtures with other nuts during winter storage.


Practical Use: Wood was used for tool handles, mallets, bowls, furniture components, and early machinery parts because it is hard and shock resistant. Beech was a traditional choice for smoking meats due to its clean, mild aroma when burned.


Modern Industrial/Commercial Uses: Used in flooring, furniture, veneer, plywood cores, and specialty wooden goods such as dowels and tool handles. Beech wood is also used in the food industry for smoking cheese and cured meats.


Cultural/Spiritual Significance: Symbolizes knowledge, memory, and longevity. Smooth trunks were historically used as living record keepers where people engraved clan symbols, travel markers, or personal messages. Beech groves were seen as quiet, contemplative places associated with old growth wisdom.


Safety/Toxicity: Beech nuts are safe in moderate amounts but can cause digestive discomfort if eaten in excess due to tannins. Raw nuts should be eaten sparingly. Leaves and bark are safe in mild medicinal preparations.



ADLER


Speckled Alder (Alnus incana subsp. rugosa)

History: Speckled Alder has long grown along rivers, wetlands, and beaver meadows across Ontario. Indigenous communities valued it as a reliable shrub-tree of moist places, using it for medicine, tools, and dyes. Its ability to fix nitrogen made it one of the first species to reclaim disturbed or eroded land. Early settlers used it for charcoal, small implements, and restoring tired soils near homesteads.


Parts Used: Bark, catkins, leaves, twigs, and wood.


Medicinal Properties: Bark decoctions were traditionally used to ease fevers, sore throats, and mild digestive inflammation. Leaf poultices helped soothe skin irritation, minor infections, and swelling. Catkin infusions supported circulation and were used as a cleansing tonic in some traditional practices.


Culinary Use: Not a food plant. Only mild medicinal teas were consumed from bark or catkins.


Practical Use: Twigs and small branches were used for basket hoops, fish traps, and tool handles. Wood was used for charcoal, smoking foods, and small carving projects. Because it grows quickly, it was often cut for seasonal repairs around camps and homesteads.


Modern Industrial/Commercial Uses: Used in ecological restoration to stabilize streambanks, restore wetlands, and improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation. Occasionally harvested for pulpwood, small woodworking, or charcoal production.


Cultural/Spiritual Significance: Seen as a water guardian and a sign of healthy wetlands. Associated with cleansing, renewal, and the resilience of places shaped by water. Often marks traditional gathering areas for plant harvesting and wildlife tracking.


Safety/Toxicity: Generally safe in mild medicinal amounts. Bark contains tannins that may cause stomach discomfort if taken strong or in excess. Not recommended during pregnancy.



HAWTHORN


Hawthorns (Crataegus spp.)

History: Hawthorns have long grown across Ontario’s meadows, forest edges, savannas, and fencerows. Indigenous peoples recognized them as valuable medicine shrubs and dependable wildlife plants, while settlers used them for natural hedgerows and early field boundaries. Their dense, thorny growth provided shelter for small birds and animals, making them an important part of traditional harvesting landscapes.


Parts Used: Berries (haws), flowers, leaves, bark, and wood.


Medicinal Properties: Hawthorn is best known as a heart supporting plant. Berries and flowers were used to strengthen circulation, ease palpitations, and calm the nervous system. Leaf infusions supported digestion and relaxation. Bark decoctions helped with sore throats and minor inflammation. Traditionally, it was taken in gentle doses over time rather than as an acute treatment.


Culinary Use: Ripe berries were eaten fresh, cooked into jams, or dried for winter storage. They were also steeped to make teas or mild fruit broths. Some nations used the tart berries in sauces and soups when other fruits were scarce.


Practical Use: Wood, though small, is very dense and was used for tool handles, pegs, and walking sticks. The thorny branches were woven into natural fences, livestock deterrents, and protective hedgerows. Berries were used as bait for small game and birds.


Modern Industrial/Commercial Uses: Commonly planted in hedgerows, wildlife restoration sites, and pollinator corridors. Hawthorn extracts are used in herbal supplements and heart tonics. Also valued ornamentally for spring blossoms and fall fruit.


Cultural/Spiritual Significance: Often associated with protection, boundaries, and transition spaces. In many cultures, hawthorn marks the edges between cultivated land and wild land. The tree’s thorns symbolize safeguarding, while its blossoms represent renewal and seasonal change.


Safety/Toxicity: Berries and flowers are safe when consumed in moderate amounts. Leaves are also safe for tea. Seeds should not be eaten in quantity as they contain trace cyanogenic compounds. Thorns can cause deep punctures and should be handled carefully.
